So, an interesting development has... developed. Right now I'm scheduled to ETS (get out of the army) in jan 2012. My best friend in the army is thinking about reenlisting to go to germany and wants me to go with him.
The down side to doing that is that i'd be in the army for an extra 2 years past my current contract and wouldn't get out until 2014.
The up side is that i'd be living in europe for 3 years. every so often the army has a 3 or 4 day weekend, and i've heard units stationed in europe get even more than those stationed in the U.S. with every part of europe within 8 hours of where i'd be, i've already figured out how conversations would go before those long weekends:
other guy: i'm bored. what do you want to do this weekend?
me: i dunno. wanna go to rome?
other guy: sure
then we'd go to rome. or athens. or venice. or berlin. or london. or moscow. etc. etc. etc.
it's a once in a life time oportunity, but i also takes 2 years from my life. i'm torn. what are your thoughts? i think i know what most of you would recommend, but i want to hear your advice anyways. let me know.

WOW!, you actually properly used some capital letters in writing this post. Is your new work in the Army getting to you?
Dad and I have been discussing whether to get regular passports or enhanced licences (for going to Canada). Now we need to think further.
On the topic of your post: You're a grown man, Make your own decisions!
I think it is a wonderful opportunity. I never had the chance to travel outside the US (except when we drove through Canada on our way to Illinois).
Think and pray about it and then follow your heart.
You have out support whatever you choose.
Love,
Dad
What are you cRaZy Andrew!!??? Two years (extra Army time) in Germany with the chance to travel all over Europe??? If you def would be there, Auntie says "go for it"!!! At your age, you have all the time in the world and the chance for exciting life experiences that you may never get again. You should also see if the Army offers any kind of schooling in languages or international something. Would be good for future job opportunities! In any case, if you do go (and of course this does have to be YOUR decision) I will be on the passport line with your mom and dad!!!!
1. Are you 100% sure you'd be stationed in Germany? And if so, where? Close enough to an airport to travel easily? (not sure how these things work in the Army)
2. Having just been to Germany, I have to say it's totally awesome and I think you'd love it.
3. If you don't re-enlist, what will you do instead?
4. I'm visiting you. Quarterly.
Um not sure why I showed up as 'hkmartino' in my last post. That's my mom...
Andrew,
I thought you were a lifer. Can you reenlist now? I thought you had to be within one year of ETS. Or are you planning ahead?
Dad,
I think trips to NJ count as foreign travel.
Ouch, Don...good one. Brooklyn is another place you need a passport for (Brooklyn the place, not Brooklynn the kid!)!!
Andrew...could you do OCS still? I'm just thinking of the possibilities you could be boosting your resume with, while you are off traipsing around Europe.
mom, you're right. i did properly use some capital letter in this post. my apologies. i'll try not to let it happen again.
aunt martha, 4 out of 5 doctors agree i'm crazy.
maureen, keep your mom off. that was very strange for a solid 5 seconds.
don, i can reenlist 2 years from my ETS date, which would be in jan. but for some reason the army said anyone who's window opens march or earlier can reenlist now. don't know why. you've got the oak leaf tho, maybe you can ask.
There's no question Andrew....it's genetic! LOL!!!
